Waterproof Versus Water-Resistant Products
A guide to water-resistance claims, charging ports, cleaning, bath or shower use, storage, and when water exposure is not worth the risk.
Read the exact water rating
Waterproof, water-resistant, and splash-resistant do not mean the same thing. A product may tolerate rinsing but not submersion, or it may be safe in water only when a port cover is sealed. Use the manufacturer's instructions, not the marketing word alone.
If no rating or instructions are supplied, keep powered products away from water. Do not submerge chargers, cords, remotes, battery compartments, or products with damaged seals.
Separate cleaning from bath or shower use
A product that can be rinsed for cleaning may still be unsafe or impractical for bath or shower use. Wet hands, slippery surfaces, lubricant, soap, glass, charging ports, and balance can add risk.
Clean with the approved method, dry every seam and port completely, and wait before storage. Do not charge a wet product.
Retire products with water damage
Stop using a product if water appears inside a compartment, the motor changes sound, controls fail, charging becomes unreliable, corrosion appears, or the surface swells, cracks, or smells unusual.
