How to Clean and Store Sex Toys Safely

A practical cleaning and storage guide for adult products, with material-aware care, sharing precautions, inspection steps, and privacy-minded storage.

Start with the product instructions

Cleaning is not one universal routine. The safest method depends on the material, seams, electronics, motor, finish, and water-resistance rating of the complete product. Read the manufacturer instructions before first use, then keep them where you can find them again.

Wash your hands before handling a clean product. Inspect the surface under good light and do not use a product with cracks, tears, swelling, exposed wiring, rough edges, corrosion, trapped moisture, or a sticky finish that remains after approved cleaning.

Use a material-aware cleaning table

Nonporous silicone, stainless steel, aluminum, hard plastic, and break-resistant glass are generally easier to clean than porous rubbery materials, but the product's construction still matters. A motorized silicone product may need different care than a solid silicone plug with no electronics.

Decision table: nonporous motorized products usually need mild soap and water or compatible toy cleaner without submersion unless the instructions permit it; nonporous nonmotorized products may allow deeper washing or boiling only when the maker says so; porous materials should be used with a condom or barrier when practical and retired sooner if they cannot be cleaned confidently; leather, fabric, straps, and harnesses need surface-specific care and complete drying.

Clean before sharing or changing body areas

A shared product can carry body fluids between people or body areas. Wash products after use and before they touch another person's genitals. A compatible condom or barrier can help, but it should be changed before the product moves to another person or another body opening.

A product used anally should not touch the vagina or mouth until it has been cleaned as directed or covered with a new barrier. If the material or construction cannot be cleaned adequately for sharing, reserve it for one person or one body area.

Let products dry completely

Moisture left in seams, battery compartments, textured areas, hollow openings, or storage pouches can make a product harder to keep clean. After washing, rinse if the instructions require it, pat dry with a clean lint-free cloth, and leave the product exposed to air until every surface is dry.

Do not put a damp product into a closed case, drawer, or plastic bag. Keep charging contacts, magnetic ports, remotes, and battery covers dry unless the instructions specifically approve water exposure.

Store each product separately

Storage checklist: clean before storing; dry completely; separate each product in its own clean pouch or case; keep it in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and excess heat; avoid tight cable wrapping; keep instructions and charging cords identifiable; keep products and small parts away from children and pets.

Separate soft products unless the manufacturer confirms their materials can remain in contact. Some materials can discolor, stick, absorb odor, or change texture when stored against another surface.

Know when to replace a product

Retire a product when it cannot be cleaned as directed, smells unusual after cleaning, has damaged electronics, becomes sticky or rough, loses its seal, or has unclear material information. Replacement is also the safer choice when a product has been shared without cleaning and its material may be porous.
